About Us
Highlights and Activities of the Department of Family Medicine
Residency
Our Residency program is one of the oldest Family Medicine residencies in the U.S. The Department combines the rigors of a university setting with the practical and friendly character of a community hospital.
Patient Care at the Family Medicine Center
Highland Family Medicine, an outpatient primary care facility where faculty, residents, and other healthcare providers see their patients. Highland Family Medicine underwent a year-long renovation that was completed in 2020. The Family Medicine Center also includes: Highland Southwedge Pharmacy, Strong Lab Services, and Strong Behavioral Health.
Global Health
In 2002, the Department of Family Medicine created a Global Health Track. Faculty, residents and community members travel to a rural community in Honduras twice per year.
Research
The faculty in the URMC Department of Family Medicine are some of the most prolific researchers in Primary Care. Our Family Medicine Research Programs building is home to the Center for Communication in Healthcare.
Medical Student Education
Our faculty and residents teach University of Rochester medical students in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Fourth-year electives for non-UR medical students are also available. The medical school added a required family medicine clerkship in 2020.
Fellowships
Fellowships are offered in Maternal Child Health, Faculty Development, and Sports Medicine.
