Summer High School Volunteer Program for 2025

About the Program

The 2025 Summer High School Volunteer Program at Highland Hospital will run from Monday July 7th to Friday, August 29th.

The potential volunteer opportunities could include wayfinding (escorting patients/visitors to destination), Gift Shop Patients units (experience dependent) Imaging escort, and others. Please note, final student placement will be at the discretion of Highland Volunteer Manager.

To be considered for this program, Students must meet the following criteria:

  • Attend one of the General Information Sessions at Highland Hospital on
    • Tuesday, May 13th from 3 - 4:30 pm
    • Tuesday, May 20th from 3 - 4:30 pm
  • Be at least 14 years of age or older by July 1.
  • Commit to volunteering three to four hours per week for 8 weeks.
  • Provide a copy of your work permit if you are under the age of 18.
  • Have received two varicella vaccines (chicken pox vaccines)
  • PPD (test for Tuberculosis) test within three months
  • Attend one of the High School Volunteer orientation sessions at Highland Hospital on 
    • Wednesday, June 25th from 10am-11:30
    • Thursday, June 26th from 10-11:30
       
      (You only have to attend ONE Session)

  • Read “Summer High School Volunteer Requirements for 2025.” below.
  • Email Joan Vezelis (Joan_Vezelis@urmc.rochester.edu) to let us know which information session you will be attending. We will send you the medical paperwork with instructions to get started on before your Information Session.
  • Attend the information session, and be sure to get all the necessary documents!

Summer High School Volunteer Program Requirements for 2025

Monday July 7th to Friday, August 29th

  • Students can call starting Thursday, May 1st after 9am or email Joan_Vezelis@urmc.rochester.edu to sign up for one of our information sessions
  • General Information Sessions are mandatory (student only must attend one session) and will be held at Highland Hospital on Tuesday May 13th or Tuesday May 20th from 3-4:30pm. Please email Joanie Vezelis (email above) and let me know what session you will be attending. You need to be at least 14 years of age or older by July 1.
  • You are responsible for providing a copy of your work permit if you are under the age of 18. Please bring a copy of your most recent work permit. These can be obtained from your school counselor’s office.
  • You must be comfortable working independently and with a minimum amount of supervision.
  • You can commit to volunteering three to four hours per week for 8 weeks.
  • Surgical face masks are required to be worn in all patient areas.
  • Please use one single consistent email for all paperwork.
  • Highland Hospital requires two varicella (chicken pos vaccines) to volunteer at Highland. NYS schools only require one vaccination. Please be advised if you have only received one vaccine, you will be required to receive a second vaccine from your Primary Care Physician before volunteering in our program. 
  • Potential volunteer opportunities include (but are not limited to wayfinding, gift shop, patient units (experience dependent), imaging escort, etc. Please note student placement will be at the discretion of Highland Hospital Manager. 

At the information session we will go over orientation materials, available placements and any other questions students may have. Parents are welcome to stay for the information session.We look forward to seeing you this year!
