Susan McDaniel, PhD, was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Rochester Academy of Medicine. McDaniel received the Dr. Madeline H. Schmitt, PhD, RN, FAAN Award for Interprofessional Education, for breaking barriers in health care and changing health care education and practice for the better. Dr. McDaniel is the chief psychologist for the Department of Psychiatry, vice chair of the Department of Family Medicine, director of the Physician Faculty Communication Coaching Program, and director of the Institute for the Family. She also served as academic chief for Psychiatry’s division of Collaborative Care & Wellness until 2021.

In her award nomination, colleagues praised McDaniel’s work pioneering the integration of clinical psychology and medicine, most notably in the fields of family psychology and family medicine. For much of her career, she has focused on helping physicians improve their psychosocial knowledge and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration in patient care.

“Her skill in inviting and balancing multiple disciplines’ perspectives, alongside those of patients, families, and communities, is noteworthy,” wrote nominator Tziporah Rosenberg, PhD, LMFT  “Her focus on integrating these principles into living, breathing health care systems, inpatient and outpatient, hospital- and community-based, is admirable.”

Nina G. Piazza, MD, Senior Instructor of Family Medicine, Assistant Director of Medical Student Education completed the STFM Medical Student Educators Development Institute, an 18-month longitudinal fellowship for faculty members focused on leadership in medical student education.

As a part of the fellowship, she created a scholarly project about integrating Social Determinants of Health screening, connection to resources, and advocacy, which was presented at the STFM Medical Student Education Conference in January 2023.

Jennifer Maguire, MD, was selected for participation in the STFM Emerging Leaders Fellowship. This is a yearlong program which provides leadership training, tools, and support for new faculty and those who are transitioning to leadership roles.

Dr. Maguire joined the Department of Family Medicine faculty in September 2020 and started in the role of Associate Medical Director/Quality Officer in July 2022. She is excited for the opportunity to develop her leadership skills throughout the fellowship and to incorporate what she has learned in her roles at HFM.

Gretchen Roman, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine Research, Department of Public Health Sciences has been accepted as a mentee in the year-long (April 2023-2024) Society of General Internal Medicine, Partnered Research Program sponsored by the Veterans Administration Health Services Research and Development Service. She has also been selected to participate as a Fellow in the 23rd Annual Summer Institute on Randomized Behavioral Clinical Trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
