On Match Day fourth year medical students across the country learned where they will be spending the next four years of their residencies. This year 10 residents from across the country have been matched with Highland Family Medicine and two with Brown Square Health Center. The group includes 10 women and two men who come from 11 different medical schools. The diverse class includes Black, Latina, Korean, Indian, and Pakistani physicians. They hail from New York, Michigan, North Carolina, California, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. In addition to English there are those who speak Spanish, Nepali, Hindi and Punjabi in addition to English.

Three have masters degrees – in Public Health, Nutrition, and Medical Humanities and the class includes talented individuals who had as many as 10 peer-reviewed journal publications, Included are students who were the president of their medical school ethics society, mentors for adults with developmental disabilities, a hospice home volunteer, an OMM teaching fellow, a domestic violence and sexual assault counselor, student free clinic leaders, a patient education comic book creator, a former general surgery resident changing specialties, an Americorps volunteer, a Fullbright scholar, an unhoused patient advocate, an asylee and torture victim advocate, a Tae Kwon Do blackbelt instructor, and an elaborate cake decorator!

Two graduates of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry Mary Shea “Shea” Kelly-Buckley, MD  and Catherine “Katie” Klapheke, MD have elected to stay in Rochester and be part of the Brown Square Residency Program. “My time at Brown Square as a medical student both affirmed my career choice and informed my desire to stay in Rochester for residency training,” said Dr. Kelly-Buckley. “I’m so grateful for the chance to continue to learn from the patients and team at Brown Square as a resident!”
