During her second year as a UR Department of Family Medicine resident, Shifra Mincer, MD, was inspired to form the Family Medicine Journal Club to nurture lifelong learning throughout the department. Faculty, residents, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and others throughout the department meet in person and by Zoom at noon every other Friday to discuss current journal articles and evidence based medicine. “Academics and learning are so important to us in health care,” said Dr. Mincer, who hails from New York City and came to the residency program after receiving her medical degree from SUNY Downstate, “and it’s an added bonus that we approach these articles as an interdisciplinary group.”

Dr. Mincer appreciates the academic environment of the residency program and the chance to engage with specialists across the spectrum. She is also inspired by a strong interest in women’s health. Jaclyn Grode, MD, a second year resident will succeed Dr. Mincer, who is now in her final year of residency, as the group’s leader. Dr. Grode is a native of Omaha, Nebraska and received her Doctor of Medicine from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. She feels that the best part of the residency program is developing relationships with other residents, faculty and staff at Highland Hospital and Highland Family Medicine. “You learn so much more when you are actually involved at the hospital and in the practice,” she said.

Both doctors appreciate the wide range of participants who consistently join in the Journal Club meetings. Faculty give advice about what articles to share and discuss and the American Board of Family Medicine has a National Journal Club with recommended articles. “I am excited that Jackie will take over the lead on the club when I graduate,” said Dr. Mincer. “There is so much enthusiasm in this club and new residents will have new interests,” she said.
