Jules Cohen, M.D.
Introduction
Jules Cohen (b. 1931) was a cardiologist, researcher, administrator and medical educator who, after completing graduate medical training in Rochester, Boston, London and Washington, D.C., returned to Rochester for a career that spanned five decades and two institutions: the University of Rochester Medical Center and the Rochester General Hospital. The Cohen papers were transferred by Dr. Cohen to the Rare Books & Manuscripts Section of the Edward G. Miner Library in 2005. Processing of these materials was completed in August 2008. The Papers of Jules Cohen are contained in one hundred and fifty boxes and occupy seventy-five linear feet.
Biography
Jules Cohen was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on 26 August 1931, the only child of Samuel Cohen, the owner of an appliance store in Bayonne, N.J., and Dora Goldstein. In 1932, after the death of her husband aged thirty-five, Dora Cohen returned to her native city of Rochester, New York. Jules Cohen spent his childhood and early adolescence at the family home on Vienna St. in a neighborhood on Rochester’s north side that was home to a significant Jewish community. He attended No. 9 School on Joseph Ave. and graduated from Franklin High School (1949). Cohen attended the University of Rochester, as did two of his uncles, and received his undergraduate degree in May 1953. The following autumn he entered the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, from which he received his medical degree (with honor) in 1957.
Cohen interned at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston (1957-58). He returned to Rochester in 1958 to complete his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH), the teaching hospital of the University of Rochester. In 1959-60 Cohen was a Trainee in Medicine (Hematology) at SMH, a position offered him by Lawrence Young, M.D. at end of the second year of his residency. In order to complete the two-year obligation that internists were then required to fulfill either in the military or in the U.S. Public Health Service, and to receive advanced research training, Cohen went in 1960 to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. as a Research Associate in the National Institute of Arthritis & Metabolic Diseases.
In 1962 Cohen was appointed Special Research Assistant and American Heart Association Research Fellow at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. He pursued this overseas training on the recommendation of his medical school mentor, S. Marsh Tenney, M.D. Cohen learned “exactly what I was hoping to learn about beside cardiology” from John Goodwin and staff at the Hammersmith Hospital (see oral history transcript: Box 108, Folder 8, p. 100). The limited possibilities for promotion and lack of funding convinced Cohen to return to the United States. Through the agency of Paul Yu, M.D., Chief of Cardiology at the University of Rochester, Cohen returned to Rochester in 1963 as an American Heart Association Advanced Research Fellow. That same year he joined the Medical School’s faculty as an Instructor in Medicine. Cohen was promoted to Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1966, Associate Professor of Medicine in 1969, and Professor of Medicine in November 1973.
In 1976 Cohen increased his administrative responsibilities with an appointment as Physician-in-Chief & Attending Physician at the Rochester General Hospital (RGH). He was also that institution’s Director of House Staff Training Program in Internal Medicine, and in 1979 became Director of Medical Services. In spite the extent of his responsibilities at RGH, Cohen continued to teach at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and to see patients at Strong Memorial Hospital. He also remained active on the Medical School’s admissions and curriculum committees.
In 1982 Cohen left Rochester General Hospital to assume a greater role in an area that had long been of importance to him, i.e., medical education. In that year he returned to the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education. He was also appointed Associate Chief of the Cardiology Unit in the Dept. of Medicine to work with William B. Hood, M.D., Head of the Cardiology Unit, who was succeeding Dr. Paul Yu in that capacity.
Cohen was very active in international, national and regional medical organizations; and was frequently called upon to chair or participate in Medical Center task forces and committees. In addition to his clinical, administrative and educational work, Cohen was the author of some fifty journal articles and book chapters that reflect his research interests in cardiology, hematology, psychosomatic medicine and medical education. Jules Cohen retired as Senior Associate Dean in August 1997, but remained a member of the Cardiology Unit and continued his involvement with the Thirteen Medical School Consortium (Boxes 136-140) and the Veterans Administration (Box 141-147). He was particularly active after leaving the dean’s office with formulating and planning with Karen C. Pryor a proposed Health Professions Public Service Program (Boxes 66-72).
In March 1956, a year before his graduation from medical school, Jules Cohen married Doris Eidlin. The Cohens had three children: Stephen (b. 1957), David (b. 1958) and Sharon (b. 1960). Important insights into Jules Cohen’s background, medical training and career are provided in an oral history conducted with Stephanie Brown-Clark, M.D., Ph.D. in the summer of 2006. The transcript of these tapes may be found in Box 108, Folders 7-9.
Overview of the Papers
The Papers of Jules Cohen are arranged alphabetically as they were (for the most part) organized in his office files. This arrangement has been extended to include genres of material that in many collections would constitute separate series or subseries (e.g., appointment books, correspondence, meeting notebooks, publications, etc.). Files containing sensitive information have been closed to researchers until 2050 and are indicated in the container list by an asterisk (*) between the folder number the description of its content.
The bulk of the Cohen papers pertain to his involvement in medical education at the University of Rochester. There is little in the collection relevant to Cohen’s tenure as a senior administrator at the Rochester General Hospital (Box 129) or to his clinical practice.
Prior to Cohen’s appointment as education dean in 1982, the group primarily responsible for curricular development at the University of Rochester Medical Center was the Curriculum Committee. The Cohen papers include the committee’s minutes, reports and related documents dating from 1963 to the late 1970s (Boxes 35-45). They also include a dozen files of Curriculum Committee material from the late 1950s that Cohen inherited from his predecessor when he became committee chair. The Curriculum Committee was replaced in 1979 by the Medical Education Committee (Boxes 84-86).
Material pertaining to curriculum development and change at the Medical Center is not limited to these two committees, however. Researchers interested in medical education in Rochester will also need to consult such files as the Basic Sciences Task Force (Box 17), the Biopyschosocial Model Proposal (Box 18), the Continuing Medical Education files (Box 26), the Education Policy Group files (Box 50), the General Clerkship files (Boxes 54-56), the Graduate Medical Education Committee (Boxes 60-62), the International Medicine files (Boxes 75-78), the Liaison Committee on Medical Education files (Box 80), the files devoted to each academic department (e.g., Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry), etc.
Cohen’s involvement in undergraduate and graduate medical education on a state and national level is reflected in his files on the Associated Medical Schools of New York (Boxes 12-15), the New York State Commission on Graduate Medical Education (Boxes 105-106), the Barriers to Curriculum Change study funded by the Pew Foundation (Boxes 110-116), the several educational initiatives funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Boxes 123-128), the Thirteen School Consortium files (Boxes 136-140), etc.
There is also considerable material relating to Cohen’s participation in numerous Medical Center committees and task forces and in strategic planning at the Medical Center that makes the Papers of Jules Cohen an indispensable resource for understanding the history of the Medical Center over the last three decades of the twentieth century.
