Victor G. Laties, Ph.D.
Victor G. Laties, Ph.D.
Biographical Introduction
Victor Gregory Laties, Ph.D. (1926-2020) was an important figure in the development of behavioral pharmacology and behavioral toxicology over the final four decades of the 20th century. Laties’ contributions to these fields is reflected in his nearly 100 publications – journal articles, book chapters, collections of essays, etc. published between 1958 and 2011. Thirty-nine of these publications were co-authored or co-edited with Bernard Weiss, Ph.D., Laties’ friend and close colleague both at Johns Hopkins and in Rochester.
A native of Racine, Wisconsin, Laties received his undergraduate degree (psychology) from Tufts University (1949), and his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Rochester (1954). He spent a post-doctoral year (1954/55) as a Ford Foundation teaching intern at Brown University, where he developed his life-long interest in behavioral analysis. In 1955 Laties joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as an instructor in medicine (psychology). In 1961 he was made assistant professor of pharmacology and therapeutics, and in 1964 assistant professor of psychiatry. The following year Laties left Baltimore to become associate professor of radiation biology and biophysics, and of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y. He was made full professor in 1971. Laties formally retired as professor of environmental medicine, psychology and pharmacology in 1993, though he remained active in behavioral analysis and in scientific publishing. In addition to his teaching responsibilities and research at Rochester, Laties served as acting director and then director of the Toxicology Training Program (1978-80; 1980-91, 1995-96). He also directed the Environmental Studies and Industrial Hygiene Programs between 1982 and 2001.
Laties was very active in the Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. He served on its board of directors between 1966-73, 1976-83, 1985-92, 1995-2002, and 2004-12. He was especially active in editing and publishing the Society’s two periodicals. Laties was on the board of editors of the Journal of the experimental analysis of behavior (JEAB) from 1962 to 1966, served as executive editor from 1966, and edited the journal from 1973 to 1976. He was also executive editor of the Journal of applied behavior analysis (JABA) from 1966. This activity is reflected in the material on JEAB and JABA in Boxes 1-7 of the Laties collection.
Laties also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics (1965-71), Psychopharmacology (1968-78, 1981-89), The Behavior analyst (1980-82), and Experimental and clinical psychopharmacology (1992-98). He was a member of advisory and research review committees for the National Institutes of Health, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Library of Medicine, the American Public Health Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, and other organizations. Laties was a fellow of the American Psychological Association from 1953 and served as president of the Division of Psychopharmacology (1968-69), president of the Division of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (1979-82), and in other capacities.
Organization of the Laties Papers
The Laties collection is divided into six series:
Scientific Publishing (Boxes 1-7): The largest series in the collection, this material pertains to every aspect of the publication of the Journal of the experimental analysis of behavior (JEAB), and to a lesser extent, the publishing of the Journal of applied behavior analysis (JABA). These files include correspondence on every aspect of the journals’ operation – from editorial decisions to production, finance, circulation, etc. Many of Laties’ correspondents were important figures in behavioral psychology. Their correspondence often provides interesting asides on this specialty. The files in this series are arranged chronologically.
Reviews of Articles Submitted to Journals (Boxes 8-9): This series includes reviews that Laties was asked to referee of articles submitted to such journals as JEAB, Psychopharmacologia, The Behavior analyst, The Journal of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics, etc. between 1963 and 1982. The files in this series are arranged chronologically.
Publications (Boxes 10-13): At the time these materials were transferred to the Miner Library, Laties’ reprint collection was incomplete. Most of the reprints of his journal articles, book chapters and reviews are present, however. Some of the files include correspondence on these publications. The files in this series are arranged chronologically.
Oral Presentations (Box 14): A doubtless incomplete series of oral presentations delivered at conferences, seminars, classroom lectures, etc. between 1955 and 2013. Folders 20-30 contain talks on the history of behavior analysis during the second half of the 20th century. The files in this series are arranged chronologically.
Correspondence (Boxes 15-17): A small but interesting body of correspondence written or received between 1949 and the late 1990s. The files in this series are arranged chronologically.
Other Files (Boxes 18-20): The files in this series reflect Laties’ involvement in various organizations, including committees on which he served within the University of Rochester. Apart from the CVs and annual reports, the files in this series are arranged alphabetically by the name of each corporate entity.
