  • Halligan Art Therapy Services located at 215 Alexander Street, Suite 200. Rochester, NY 14607; (585) 557-3323. Offers art therapy with specialization in working with people who have dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Traumatic Brain Injury. They also work with issues of grief and loss.
  • Nazareth College York Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14618; (585) 389-2541. Student clinicians offer art therapy under the direction of licensed art therapists.

Caregiver Support

  • Family Caregiver Alliance Offers online support groups for caregivers. This organization has a goal of providing services to family caregivers of adults with physical and cognitive impairments, such as Parkinson’s, stroke, Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Services include assessment, care planning, direct care skills, wellness programs, respite services, and legal/financial consultation vouchers.  Call (800)445-8106.
  • The Veterans Association has a range of information and resources for caregivers.  There is a Caregivers Support Line and a section of tips and tools as well as many downloadable information sheets and brochures.
  • Domus Pacis Provides respite places for cancer patients and families.
  • Rochester Regional Health Hospice and Palliative Care Services: The Center for Compassion and Healing Resources and Support  Dealing effectively with major loss or transition affects more than just your physical well-being. Emotional and spiritual health is vital, too. At the Center, you can benefit from a wide-range of services to help you heal, regardless of why you need our help. Wellness activities, education, support, and healing therapies focus on easing suffering, providing comfort, and improving your quality of life.

Float Tank

  • The Bodymind Float Center  at 622-2 Park Avenue, Rochester, NY; (585) 413-0616. Floating involves relaxing in warm salt water pools or tanks and is said to help with pain management and a sense of well-being.

Grief Services

  • UR Medicine Home Care Bereavement Losing a loved one isn’t easy to prepare for or accept. Grieving is a healthy and normal response to loss. We provide support through the bereavement process and can help individuals and families heal. We’re available to provide you or your family with as much or as little assistance before or after a loved one has died, at no cost. Our Bereavement Program is an extension of our hospice care and helps address feelings of loss, grief or sorrow.
  • Bereavement Services | Rochester Regional Health Our Hospice Care services provide an extensive menu of support groups for caregivers and the bereaved. Trained bereavement professionals are also available for more information or to make an appointment.
  • The Grief & Trauma Recovery Centre at 1100 University Avenue, Suites 203/204, Rochester, NY  14607; (585) 735-4785 offers a variety of counseling services to those dealing with grief and loss.
  • Crossbridge Wellness Affiliates at 2000 S. Winton Road, Blgd. 4, Suite 200, Rochester, NY 14618; (585) 473-2678 offers a general grief group and one for parents grieving the loss of their children.
  • GriefShare  An international organization that supports grief groups at various locations.  
  • The Compassionate Friends A national organization that provides grief support. There is a chapter at the First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Rd., Rochester, NY 14610-2956.   • Rochester Center for Pet Grief and Loss At 95 Allens Creek Road, Building 1, Suite 114, Rochester, NY 14618; (585) 615-5492 offers a support group for people who are grieving the loss of a pet.

Integrated Cancer Care (Oncology)

  • The University of Rochester Medical Center offers integrated care and wellness services for cancer patients at the Pluta Cancer Center, 125 Red Creek Drive, Rochester, NY 14623; (585) 275-5830.  Services include exercise programs, massage therapy, acupuncture, nutritional services, cooking classes, yoga (for patients and caregivers), art therapy, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, meditation, and yoga.

Medical Hypnosis

Mental and Spiritual practices

  • UR Center for Community Health and Prevention offers a group program in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction 46 Prince Street, Rochester; (585) 530-2050.  
  • Buddhi Institute Offers wisdom courses based on mindfulness, spiritual development programs, private coaching sessions, meditation classes and retreats, and guidebooks for individual study and meditation practice.   • The Assisi Institute at 1400 North Winton Road, Rochester, NY 14609; (585) 473-8731 offers classes in Kriya yoga and meditation (based on mystic Christianity), including an online meditation course.  A men’s spirituality group is held once a month.  
  • Mercy Spirituality Center 65 Highland Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620; (585) 473-6893 offers classes and retreats on topics related to spirituality.  Recent topics included centering prayer, Christian meditation, and art and spirituality. There are also 12 Step programs and spiritual direction is available.

Relational Practices/Mental Health

  • URMC Mental Health and Wellness: General Adult Outpatient Services 300 Crittenden Blvd. Rochester, NY 14642; (585) 273-5050.  Provides individual, family, couples, and group counseling for individuals 18 years of age and older.  They offer specializations in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Problem Solving Therapy.  There is also an Adult Ambulatory Clinic at Science Parkway (315 Science Parkway, Rochester, NY 14620).  Spanish Language Services are also available.
  • Older Adult Outpatient Clinic (585) 279-7849 Provides specialized mental health care for adults age 65 and older, including individual, group, and family counseling.
  • Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center 121 North Fitzhugh Street, Rochester, NY 14614; (585) 325-1180, ext 114 Faith-based organization that offers free mental health services to those who cannot afford the cost of their insurance co-payments. Services include psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychiatric collaboration and referral, case management/advocacy, and peer support meetings.
  • Perspectives Mental Health Counseling 45 Prince Street, LL004, Rochester, NY 14607; (585) 406-3012. Offers therapy groups for individuals coping with a medical illness and another for spouses who are caring for a person with medical issues.  E-mail jbondperspectives@gmail.com.
  • Pathfinder Psychotherapy Specializes in grief and loss, life-limiting illness, supporting care partners, older adults, and Highly Sensitive Persons.

Finding others: The Rochester area has many providers of counseling services. They include psychiatrists (MD’s), nurse practitioners (NP’s), psychologists (Ph.D. or Psy.D. ), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT’s), Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC), and social workers (LSW or LCSW).  Psychiatrists and NP’s are the only practitioners who can prescribe psychotropic medications. Psychologists as well as some psychiatrists can do testing to identify the type and severity of mental illnesses.  Any of the above may offer counseling services to individuals, families, and groups.     • The Parkinson’s Foundation has groups that are open to anyone diagnosed with Parkinson’s, spouse/partner, support people, and friends. 
    • Rochester Parkinson Network We are dedicated to empowering individuals affected by Parkinson's Disease (PD) by providing knowledge and fostering relationships that enhance their quality of life. We aim to cultivate a supportive community and bridge information gaps. They maintain a list of local support groups and resources at the Rochester Parkinson Network in Rochester, NY.
  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia
    • Alzheimer’s Association 
    • Rochester and Finger Lakes Region Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association  435 East Henrietta Road. Rochester, NY 14620; (800) 272-3900 provides programs, services, and advocacy to people living in a nine-county area.  A support group is held on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30-7:30 PM for patients, caregivers, family, and friends.  Caregiver support groups are offered at multiple locations. 
    • Dementia Mentors Hosts virtual memory cafés, a social gathering for those living with dementia. One-on-one mentoring sessions are also offered.
    • Positive Approach to Care  Teepa's Snow Approach methods, a series of simple techniques, are based on understanding the areas of the brain that are no longer working and making use of the parts of the brain that are still active, so you can Protect and Grow Your Relationship, Experience Less Resistance, Experience Less Stress.     • HOBSCOTCH: Home Based Self-Management & Cognitive Training Changes Lives. People with epilepsy commonly have problems with cognitive functions such as learning, concentration, and memory. These problems can occur for a variety of reasons, including the underlying cause of a person’s epilepsy, brain abnormalities, recurrent seizures, side effects of anti-seizure medicines, or any combination of these.
