Adaptive (Inclusive Recreation)

  • Pieters Family Life Center (www.pietersfamilylifecenter.org)  1025 Commons Way, Rochester, NY 14623, (585)487-3500 Has a fitness classes, a fitness center, and personal training that is accessible to persons with disabilities and seniors. Other services include aquatic classes, massage, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and creative arts therapy as well as various social activities.  Monthly membership is $15 for individuals and $30 for families.

  • Black Creek Fishing Access Site Located on Black Creek Road in Chili has an accessible fishing platform and floating dock, paved parking lot with accessible parking, picnic tables.
  • Braddock - Bay Wildlife Management Area Located in the towns of Parma and Greece, NY.  Provides accessible wildlife observation and fishing platform on Salmon Creek.

  • Halligan Art Therapy Services (www.halliganarts.com) located at 215 Alexander Street, Suite 200. Rochester, NY 14607; (585)557-3323 offers art therapy with specialization in working with people who have dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Traumatic Brain Injury. They also work with issues of grief and loss.

Caregiver Support

  • Lifetime Care David H. Adults who have lost a parent, and veterans. There is also a group for healing after suicide and one for healing after addiction or overdose.
  • Family Caregiver Alliance (https://www.caregiver.org) Offers online support groups for caregivers. This organization has a goal of providing services to family caregivers of adults with physical and cognitive impairments, such as Parkinson’s, stroke, Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Services include assessment, care planning, direct care skills, wellness programs, respite services, and legal/financial consultation vouchers.  Call (800)445-8106.
  • The Veterans Association (https://www.caregiver.va.gov) has a range of information and resources for caregivers.  There is a Caregivers Support Line and a section of tips and tools as well as many downloadable information sheets and brochures.
  • Domus Pacis (https://www.domuspacis.org/) Provides respite places for cancer patients and families.

Float Tank

  • The Bodymind Float Center (www.bodymindfloatcenter.com) at 622-2 Park Avenue, Rochester, NY; (585)413-0616. Floating involves relaxing in warm salt water pools or tanks and is said to help with pain management and a sense of well-being.

Grief Services

  • Lifetime Care The David H.   • GriefShare (https://www.griefshare.org) An international organization that supports grief groups at various locations.  
  • The Compassionate Friends (www.compassionatefriends.org) A national organization that provides grief support.  There is a chapter at the First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Rd., Rochester, NY 14610-2956.  This group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 7-9 PM. Integrated Cancer Care (Oncology)

  • The University of Rochester Medical Center offers integrated care and wellness services for cancer patients at the Pluta Cancer Center, 125 Red Creek Drive, Rochester, NY 14623; (585)275-5830.  Services include exercise programs, massage therapy, acupuncture, nutritional services, cooking classes, yoga (for patients and caregivers), art therapy, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, meditation, and yoga.

Medical Hypnosis

  • Buddhi Institute (http://www.Buddhiinstitute.com) Offers wisdom courses based on mindfulness, spiritual development programs, private coaching sessions, meditation classes and retreats, and guidebooks for individual study and meditation practice. Neurofeedback/Biofeedback

  • Strong Memorial Hospital, 300 Crittenden Blvd. Rochester, NY 14642; (585)273-5050.  Provides individual, family, couples, and group counseling for individuals 18 years of age and older.  They offer specializations in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Problem Solving Therapy.  There is also an Adult Ambulatory Clinic at Science Parkway (315 Science Parkway, Rochester, NY 14620).  Spanish Language Services are also available.
  • Older Adult Outpatient Clinic (585)279-7849 Provides specialized mental health care for adults age 65 and older, including individual, group, and family counseling.
  • Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center (https://www.scmentalhealth.org/) 121 North Fitzhugh Street, Rochester, NY 14614; (585)325-1180, ext 114 Faith-based organization that offers free mental health services to those who cannot afford the cost of their insurance co-payments.  Services include psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychiatric collaboration and referral, case management/advocacy, and peer support meetings.

  • Finding others: The Rochester area has many providers of counseling services.  They include psychiatrists (MD’s), nurse practitioners (NP’s), psychologists (Ph.D. or Psy.D. ), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT’s), Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC), and social workers (LSW or LCSW).  Psychiatrists and NP’s are the only practitioners who can prescribe psychotropic medications. Psychologists as well as some psychiatrists can do testing to identify the type and severity of mental illnesses.  Any of the above may offer counseling services to individuals, families, and groups.     • The Parkinson’s Foundation of Greater Rochester (https://www.parkinson.org) has groups that are open to anyone diagnosed with Parkinson’s, spouse/partner, support people, and friends.  There is also a young-onset support group for people diagnosed in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s.  A group for newly diagnosed patients meets two times per year and there is a 6-week self-care workshop for caretakers/care partners.  Monthly education sessions are offered August-May of each year.   • Alzheimer’s and Dementia

    • Rochester and Finger Lakes Region Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org/rochesterny) 435 East Henrietta Road. Rochester, NY 14620; (800)272-3900 provides programs, services, and advocacy to people living in a nine-county area.  A support group is held on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30-7:30 PM for patients, caregivers, family, and friends.  Caregiver support groups are offered at multiple locations. 
    • Dementia Mentors (https://www.dementiamentors.org/) Hosts virtual memory cafés, a social gathering for those living with dementia. One-on-one mentoring sessions are also offered.
