About Us
The Gastrointestinal (GI) Pathology Subspecialty service at Strong Memorial Hospital processes more than 25,000 cases annually, including biopsies and resection specimens. Our surgical pathologists provide diagnostic services for the entire luminal GI tract, including both medical and neoplastic processes, as well as diseases affecting the pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.
We actively participate in several multidisciplinary conferences at URMC, including GI/liver tumor board, liver transplant conference, and teaching conferences. The pathologists in the GI Subspecialty service are engaged in active research programs and teach medical students, pathology residents, clinical residents, and fellows. They routinely present research at national meetings and have been invited to speak all over the world.
The GI Subspecialty service is supported by a histology laboratory that provides high-quality routine and special stains, as well as an immunohistochemical laboratory that provides IHC-stained slides within 24 hours (or faster if necessary). We work with the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory to select appropriate specimens for molecular testing. Through these supportive laboratories, we provide complete immunohistochemical testing for microsatellite instability of colorectal carcinomas and IHC and FISH HER2 analysis of upper GI malignancies.
