Fellowship Research

As part of their general cardiology training and to become eligible for the pediatric cardiology board exam, all cardiology fellows are encouraged to pursue their research education with an experience in clinical or laboratory-based research. Their individual focus will depend on their research interests and career goals. Fellows can join projects currently underway in the division, initiate new projects in the division or find projects with mentors throughout the University.

This research occurs over 17 months spread out over three years of training. In the first six months of training, fellows will investigate potential projects with the help of the fellowship directors and faculty members and present their proposals to the faculty. Fellows will then identify a primary mentor and at least two other members of their Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC), at least one of which must be from outside the division. The SOC committee will meet with the fellow at least twice a year to evaluate the progress of the project.

Departmental and institutional support for fellowship research is available through a wealth of resources and tools, including educational support through the University of Rochester Clinical & Translational Science Institute (UR CTSI).

It is anticipated that these scholarly activities will result in presentations by the fellows at national meetings and in published manuscripts, as these are required for board eligibility.
