Project II: Chemical Warfare Agents

Chemical compoundSulfur and nitrogen mustard are two highly toxic chemical warfare agents. First synthesized in the 19th century, sulfur mustard (SM) remains the most utilized chemical weapon on the planet, with greater than 100 years of chemical weapon use. Recently, SM has seen a resurgence in use as a chemical weapon during Syria’s Civil War.

SM and NM cause both acute and chronic injury to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Late sequelae include chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, bronchiectasis, and, most commonly, bronchiolitis obliterans (BO).

Project II seeks to find new therapies for civilians and soldiers exposed to mustard vapors.
