University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC)

An integral part of the University of Rochester, the medical center comprises the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Nursing, Medical Faculty Group, Strong Memorial Hospital, Golisano Children's Hospital, Eastman Institute for Oral Health and the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. These facilities are located on a 4 million-square-foot complex next to the University's River Campus, just a half mile south of downtown Rochester.

With more than $135 million in National Institutes of Health research grants, URMC ranks in the top 25% of all medical centers in federally funded research. A bold, 10-year initiative has resulted in dramatic increases in federal NIH funding, new research facilities, and the recruitment of some of the world's finest scientists.

University of Rochester Clinical & Translational Science Institute (UR CTSI)

Saunders Research Building CTSIURMC is one of a select few institutions nationwide to receive funding from the National Institutes of Health to establish the University of Rochester Clinical & Translational Science Institute (UR CTSI). Housed in the Saunders Research Building, the UR CTSI’s mission is to lead the emerging field of clinical and translational research. Dedicated space and equipment allow researchers to more efficiently advance treatments to patients, taking research from “bench to bedside to curbside.”

Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building

The centerpiece of a $500 million expansion of the School of Medicine and Dentistry's basic science programs, the 240,000 square-foot Kornberg building was dedicated in 1999 and is home to the Aab Institute of Biomedical Sciences, four genetic laboratory floors, a single level vivarium, and medical school education rooms. Research laboratories feature state-of-the-art scientific equipment, and triangular break rooms on each floor foster interaction and the exchange of ideas among scientists. The building houses some of the premiere research at URMC Medical Center, including the Center for Pediatric Biomedical Research.

Medical Research Building (MRBX)

MRBX BuildingThis four-story 143,000 square-foot building, the “MRBX”, was completed in 2002 and is an extension of the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building, connected by a three-story, glass-enclosed walkway. The work of scientists located here complements the research taking place in the Aab Institute. The building houses the Lung Biology and Disease Program, Strong Children’s Research Center and other research programs in the areas of surgery, medicine and genetics.

Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI)

In 2007, the Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) was opened to bring together more than 100 scientists, students and technicians under one roof. The institute, located about 5 miles from the Medical Center, has 12 cardiovascular research laboratories that currently conduct more than 50 research projects with the goal of furthering the understanding of heart disease. The CVRI also provides educational programs that train well rounded clinical and research cardiologists.
