After the nurse, when I saw Dr Ricciardi I can't explain exactly why I changed my mind except that he gave me the space to change my mind and follow a more conservative approach which was to follow pt exercises and that it would likely improve over months, I recall 2 months so I changed my mind and opted out of a shot of cortisone. I'm not sure cortisone specifically was mentioned when the nurse was describing the shot.

Interactions with provider leading up to and including the day of surgery were excellent, however the 1st post-operation checkup seemed very rushed and less personal. Perhaps that was because the surgeon was very pleased with the results and how things were tracking, but that wasn't clearly communicated in our very brief time together.

Dr. Ricciardi is a man of few words. I have no doubt about his excellence in the operating room and certainly I would choose him again for more surgery. I would have liked more of a relationship with him and more from him in terms of him getting to know me. Excellent surgeon but has difficulty engaging. If I hadn't asked questions, my visit would have been about 2 mins. I had x-rays done but I had to ask to see them. Frankly other than for the x-rays, I'm not sure what the purpose of the appt was. All doctor did was watch me walk round the tiny room, look at my healed incision and did a very quick assessment of my muscle strength. I would have appreciated his taking the Initiative to tell me what to expect over the next 2 months in my healing process rather than me having to ask. And when I did, I got very vague answers.

This provider, although from all accounts an excellent surgeon needs to learn to respect his patients concerns. I have additional challenges leftover from an orthopedic trauma surgery in 2021 and know that physical therapy would help me integrate my new hip into the rest of my lower body. This provider dismisses all physical therapists as hurting patients and does not allow them to begin work until the 6th week. As I know time is vital in recovery I asked to see my PT (who has restored me to health after other serious surgeries) in the 5th week and was declined. I brought this up at this appt and, in anger, he stated "no one is going to touch MY implant but me because if they mess it up I can't fix it." I remain stunned to his anger and arrogance. I began PT just after six weeks passed and have made progress. [...] I have continued to have a lot of groin pain [...] which he diminished in his chart note as "some groin pain" and incorrectly noted that I am taking Tylenol not "as much as the bottle will let me take" as I told him but that I am taking Tylenol "intermittently". I am hoping that he somehow learns to partner with not only his patients but with the entire healthcare team of the patient, i.e. Physical therapy. I am also concerned that he is being misleading to other providers in his chart note.

I am seeing this provider solely as the orthopaedic doctor I have seen for 20 years retired last spring. As my medical records are not part of the MyChart system I brought both the xrays and doctor's note from [...] with me as the opinion of my retiring doctor ([...]) was very important to me. I wanted to know the change in my hip condition since March. Although Dr. Ricciardi read my doctor's note once I presented them to him, he did not make the time to compare the xrays from March with those taken that day. While I value a doctor's time constraints, it would have instilled a much higher satisfaction with Dr. Ricciardi if he had taken a few extra minutes for this purpose. It did seem that I was simply just another patient with a medical record number. While this in no way diminishes this provider's surgical skills, it does diminish my initial satisfaction with this provider.

I had gone to this Physician for a second opinion-because I wasn't happy with the level of care I got from the Physician I had seen closer to my home. Dr. Ricciardi answered all of my questions and then listened and answered all of those by my spouse. He showed us my x-rays and what was going on with my hip. He never made us feel rushed and put our minds at ease about the next course in my care. I switched to being his patient (and not just a 2nd opinion) on that day. I have never regretted this decision even though it is a fair distance from my home.

This was my 6 month checkup for total hip replacement. Dr. Ricciardi gauged my expectations well for this part of my recovery, so I understand that I have reached full range of motion for the prothesis installed.
