I am a board certified and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in orthopedic sports medicine; arthroscopic surgery (minimally invasive surgery) of the knee and shoulder; as well as shoulder reconstruction and replacement. I am an expert in sports related knee injuries (meniscal injuries and ACL tears), as well as traumatic and degenerative shoulder conditions including rotator cuff tears, shoulder arthritis, shoulder fractures, and shoulder dislocations/instability.

I partner with patients to determine their goals and expectations, then provide medical care--both surgical and non-surgical--to obtain excellent outcomes that help patients of all ages achieve and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. I provide high quality, evidenced based, and cutting-edge care to all of my patients.

I am one of the most published orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons in western and upstate New York. I have published over 170 manuscripts and book chapters, have been awarded several competitive research grants, and invented a surgical device that was patented. My research has been presented at regional, national, and international conferences. I have expertise in shoulder injuries and arthritis, regenerative medicine, post traumatic arthritis following ACL tears and rotator cuff tears, and studying the clinical outcomes of orthopaedic sports medicine surgery procedures.

I remain an active volunteer physician with the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) and provide medical care for U.S. Olympic athletes. I am also a former team physician for the Golden Eagles at SUNY Brockport (serving in this role for 7 years). I have successfully operated upon professional, collegiate and high school athletes. I have been able to help my patients return to international competition, as well as becoming college All-Americans, All-Conference, and national champions. My patients have routinely successfully returned to play 'on the next level' after recovery from surgery.

Research

At the University of Rochester School of Medicine, my research interests have spanned three broad areas: clinical outcomes research, basic and translational science research, and medical/surgical education.

I am currently collaborating actively with Dr, Whasil Lee studying the relationship between ACL knee injuries and the development of post traumatic osteoarthritis. We are also studying the link between rotator cuff tears and the development of shoulder arthritis. These study is funded by both internal institutional grants and extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health. The research is utilizing modern imaging and molecular biology techniques to study the role of calcium handling in chondrocytes to evaluate the development of post traumatic arthritis.

I am the chair of the Orthopedic Surgery clinical research committee. I am committed to studying PROMIS outcomes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery patients, evaluating function and outcomes following ACL reconstruction surgery, shoulder replacement surgery, shoulder labrum (Bankart) repair, and rotator cuff repair surgery. We have learned some valuable insights on our patient’s performance following surgery, to help our patients optimize their surgical result, speed their recovery, and maximize their outcomes after surgery at URMC.

I am very involved in medical student, resident and fellowship education in orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal education throughout the University of Rochester Medical Center. I am active in the residency program evaluation committee, the residency curriculum committee, the diversity initiative, and the sports medicine fellowship. I am actively researching novel techniques related to medical education, surgical skills acquisition, and diversity of the orthopedic work force. I have been fortunate enough to also be involved in teaching the musculoskeletal medical school curriculum at University of Rochester.

Many of our findings on the athletic patient population have been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented both nationally and internationally. Through this team approach, we hope to translate our basic science research findings into clinical recommendations that will ultimately benefit our patients, allowing us to provide world-class and cutting-edge patient care.

There was just one question that the provider didn"t answer. He didn"t answer it in the previous appointment either. The question may seem unimportant to him but it is important to me. He just ignores the question instead of really giving an answer. Overall I still feel he is excellent and would recommend him to other people.
