I am a board certified and shoulder fellowship trained Orthopaedic surgeon with extensive experience in arthroscopic shoulder surgery as well as complex shoulder reconstruction and replacement. I have been practicing at the University of Rochester since 1998. I am currently Chief of the Shoulder Division, and in that role I am responsible for overseeing shoulder care and education in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Rochester Medical Center. I am also a team physician for the Rochester Knighthawks Lacrosse team and have been involved in taking care of athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional level throughout my entire career. I also have the expertise in shoulder replacement surgery in the more elderly and severely injured patients with complex or chronic shoulder ailments and shoulder arthritis. My goal is to provide all my patients with state of the art shoulder care so that they can get back to being active and live life to their fullest potential.

Clinical and basic science research in shoulder disorders, as well as surgical device innovation, has been a major interest of mine since I joined the University of Rochester. This academic work resulted in a significant body of published research and creation of new devices related to shoulder disorders and shoulder surgery. I really enjoy the research aspect of my work because it allows me to contribute to the field of shoulder surgery on a larger scale in order to improve the lives of patients with shoulder disorders.

Patient Comments

Dr Voloshin was excellent. Clear explanations and recommendations. He was efficient but also gave me time to make sure my questions were answered. I will recommend him without hesitation. I saw him on a Thursday and grateful he fit me in on Monday for surgery.

Aug 29, 2024

The doctor had a quick way of speaking: I have to say I felt ok with his manner because I have a background in healthcare and understood my diagnosis and care strategy without much assistance. I could see his manner construed as brusque (the reviews of him online say that) but it might have to do with how well a person can follow his logic or the specialized language he uses. I don't have any complaints but feel this may with mentioning because he may be well-intentioned but could benefit from slowing down to make sure patients understand the plan of care.

Aug 28, 2024

Again he was abrasive and blunt. Direct and as o matter of fact attitude. No compassion

Aug 28, 2024

Although I thought my only option would be surgery, the surgeon offered a less painful and reasonable option

Aug 26, 2024

I have come to trust and respect Dr V, his PAs, Lindsey and Carrie. I know I am in good hands and appreciate their caring and patience and advice. I have and will continue to recommend this office.

Aug 08, 2024

Dr. Voloshin is a fantastic physician and master surgeon. I appreciated his "matter of factness." He does not beat around the bush. He tells it like he sees it from his years of experience. I appreciate direct information.

Dr. Voloshin Did an excellent job explaining my MRI what needed to be done to correct my Torn Rotator cuff. He also provided me with information alternatives to surgery. We discussed possible repercussions if I chose to delay surgery. His explanation and our discussion made it easy for me to make a decision about how I wanted to move forward.

1.0

I understand Dr. Voloshin is a great surgeon. In an office appointment, he was unreceptive to questions or comments, and allowed me maybe a total of 4 minutes to discuss possible options to repair an injured shoulder before he handed me his business card, told me to call for another appointment when I was ready. His whole demeanor was pretty rude.

[...] Nice suit Absent patient centered service. [...] That would be a waste of his time and mine. [...] Very rushed. I was talking through the sliding door to him. He was rude the whole time. Didn't explain care at all and had zero time for questions.

This provider is an excellent surgent, however, follow up is not what I desire.

Dr Voloshin is a very "to the point" provider. I want professional. I feel that's what I received

The BEST in this State. I wouldn't go anyplace or see anyone else for a Total Shoulder Replacement

Feb 16, 2023

My shoulder replacement went very well and am recovering on time. I did express some concern about some lingering shoulder pain while attempting to sleep. At that time Dr. Voloshin spotted what may be a rotator cuff tear. He has scheduled me for a follow up visit in 3 months to check, [...] I do not feel that Dr. Voloshin adequately explained if this is a new injury or something that was missed previously.

I feel that Dr Voloshin did a great job with my surgery and the problems I came in for are just something I will deal with.

Because I know he is one of the best shoulder surgery doctors at UR Medicine I would probably have him do my Rotator Cuff surgery if possible. [...] Up until my accident I have been very active doing my Kayaking, hiking, fishing and traveling in our 5h wheel [...] but the Doctor refused to listen to me about my prior health and activities.

Dr. Voloshin and his PA were very efficient, were prepared by having reviewed the history of my condition prior to the appointment, and thoroughly explained the planned course of treatment.

This was first appointment with Dr. Voloshin- he is an excellent physician! I had to wait a few months for the appointment but it was well worth the wait.

Visit was due to continuing pain/discomfort from an on the job injury....after less than 2 minutes listening to my concerns and speaking with another person in the room, I was told I would just "have to live with it". NOT the answer I was expecting, or willing to accept.

Good surgeon, could improve in discussion of care of shoulder going forward, if should continue PT, what to do if pain starts. I guess I felt rushed, but my shoulder is 100 percent better so I am satisfied

I know he's an expert in his field, but his "bedside manner" is severely lacking. Very abrupt and dismissive. However, I would continue to go to him, and to recommend him to others, because he is considered to be an excellent physician for shoulder problems.

The provider was clearly was very short on time, so I was not able to ask questions. I completed the entire pre-check computer survey before checking in, and he relied on this information for my treatment plan, with no further discussion between us. It was a straightforward diagnosis (bursitis), with no treatment options other than the one he utilized (steroid injection followed by PT).

This Dr is a brilliant surgeon and I am fortunate to have been under his care. I am aware of time limits for office visits and how very busy he is..... I give him high marks, but feel more time was needed for me to ask questions I had. Would not hesitate for a minute to recommend him to others.
