Raymond J. Mayewski, MD, ’76M (Res), ’79M (Flw)
Dr. Raymond John Mayewski is a professor of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Previously, he served as chief medical officer at Strong Memorial Hospital for over 20 years. Mayewski has proudly served URMC, the School, and the Rochester community for nearly 50 years.
Mayewski received his pre-medical degree from Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree from Temple University. After finishing his medical and chief medical residencies at Strong Memorial Hospital, he completed a fellowship in pulmonary disease at Strong Memorial Hospital and in patient safety and medical error at the Open Medical Institute in Salzburg, Austria.
Early in his career, Mayewski understood that philanthropy was a key ingredient for successful clinical program development at an academic medical center. As a recipient of an endowed professorship, made possible by one of his own patients, Mayewski became interested in beginning a program to help educate physicians how to collaborate with advancement professionals to develop philanthropic skills. This interest, coupled with a strong partnership with URMC advancement leadership, led to the development of the philanthropy champions program. This program has enrolled nearly 60 senior clinicians, resulted in several million dollars in philanthropic gifts, and serves as a model used by other medical centers throughout the country.
Mayewski received a Best Doctors in America Award in 2017, the American College of Physicians Teaching Scholar Award in 1986, and the Arthur Bauman Teaching Award from the URMC department of medicine in 1982. Additionally, he is a member of the American College of Physicians and the Monroe County Medical Society. He previously served on the editorial board of Annals Internal Medicine, and has co-authored more than 40 journal articles, chapters, and abstracts.
