Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
Pregnancy loss is a deeply emotional experience. When it happens more than once, it can feel even more devastating and confusing. At our clinic, we specialize in the evaluation and management of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) to help you better understand the possible causes and improve your chances of a healthy pregnancy.
What Is Recurrent Pregnancy Loss?
Recurrent pregnancy loss is defined as two or more consecutive or non-consecutive pregnancy losses. Most losses occur in the first trimester (before 13 weeks), but RPL can also include second-trimester losses.
It’s important to know that pregnancy loss is not your fault, and many individuals with RPL eventually go on to have healthy pregnancies—especially with appropriate evaluation and care.
What Causes Recurrent Pregnancy Loss?
There are many potential causes of RPL, including:
- Genetic abnormalities in the embryo, often due to chromosomal imbalances (aneuploidy)
- Structural abnormalities of the uterus, such as a septum or fibroids
- Endocrine disorders, such as thyroid dysfunction or uncontrolled diabetes
- Blood clotting disorders
- Immune-related conditions
- Lifestyle or environmental factors
- Sperm quality or DNA fragmentation
- Unexplained (in about 30–50% of cases, no clear cause is found)
We take a comprehensive and individualized approach to evaluating possible contributors and tailoring your care plan.
How We Evaluate Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
Your evaluation may include:
- Genetic testing of pregnancy tissue (if available) or parental karyotyping
- Uterine imaging (such as saline sonohysterogram or hysteroscopy)
- Blood tests to assess hormone levels, clotting factors, and immune markers
- Assessment of ovulation and cycle regularity
- Semen analysis and advanced sperm testing when appropriate
Our goal is to identify any treatable factors and help you move forward with a plan that gives you the best chance for success.
Treatment Options
Depending on your evaluation results, treatment may include:
- Surgical correction of uterine abnormalities
- Thyroid or hormonal support
- Low-dose aspirin or blood thinners in cases of clotting disorders
- Lifestyle modifications or nutritional support
- Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A) in IVF cycles to select chromosomally normal embryos
- Immunologic or anti-inflammatory treatments, when indicated
For many patients, simply having answers and a roadmap can restore hope.
