Clinical Services

The Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology is involved in the perioperative and anesthetic management for over 1,200 cardiac procedures each year.

  • We care for patients undergoing complex open-heart and minimally-invasive cardiac surgical operations, including revascularization, valve repair and replacement, adult congenital procedures, and major aortic procedures. Our institution has received recognition as a Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center by the Mitral Foundation and American Heart Association.
  • We are one of the nation’s highest volume ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation centers and provide anesthetic management for patients undergoing a variety of surgical and percutaneous procedures for the treatment of heart failure.  These procedures include durable and percutaneous VAD implantation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) implantation, and heart transplantation.
  • We are active members of the Structural Heart Team and provide anesthetic care and assist with echocardiographic imaging guidance for percutaneous cardiac interventions.  These interventions include transcatheter aortic valve replacement, transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement, atrial septal defect closure, left atrial appendage closure, and percutaneous thrombectomy.
  • Our division provides anesthetic care for patients undergoing high-risk electrophysiology procedures, including surgical ablation, high-risk lead extraction, and ECMO-assisted ablation for ventricular tachycardia.
