Career Development

Wilmot provides continuing education and mentorship programs for fellows, healthcare professionals, and faculty of all levels.

Wilmot Physician-Scientist Fellowship Program

The Wilmot Physician-Scientist Fellowship Program supports mentored research training for physicians with M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees who have completed residency training and intend to pursue an academic career in clinical, translational or basic cancer research. The program aims to provide research training to prepare physicians for independent careers in cancer research and training.

Wilmot Team Science Pilot Program

The Wilmot Team Science Pilot Program funds researchers at the University of Rochester whose work focuses on cancer. Proposals must target competitive multiple principal investigator (MPI) R01 grant applications to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and may involve basic, translational, clinical, or population science research. At least two PIs are required for each application; at least one PI must be a Wilmot member.

Office of Faculty Development

The Office of Faculty Development at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry aims to enhance and maintain the faculty's vitality and growth by organizing educational and professional events that advance the academic missions of teaching, research, and clinical care. The office coordinates various programs and hosts multiple events that work towards fulfilling this mission.

  • The Early-Stage Faculty Boot Camp is designed to help Senior Instructors and Assistant Professors identify the skills they need for more successful career advancement. The format is an all-day, three-day course, allowing for continuity, focus, and networking among faculty members. Participants are asked to commit to attending all sessions. There is no charge for URMC faculty members; however, space is limited. CME credits are provided.
  • The Junior Faculty Biomedical Research Association is a peer group that caters to the specific requirements of early-stage Ph.D. and MD faculty. It aims to support their success in various aspects, such as scientific discovery, funding, publications, mentoring, teaching, and service to the University of Rochester and the larger Rochester community.
  • The Rochester Early-Stage Investigator (RESIN) program works across departments and centers to optimize and support training for early-stage investigators across the translational spectrum. RESIN is designed to help early-stage investigators develop the skills and knowledge to innovate and improve the efficacy and efficiency of translation, from discovery to implementation and dissemination within the Learning Health System and beyond.
  • The Ever Better Mentoring Course is a six-week hybrid course on academic mentoring that is perfect for early-career faculty who want to start mentoring. It was created to address the academic need for quality mentorship of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career faculty. It fosters practical knowledge from recognized theoretical models and best mentoring practices.
