The Department of Pediatrics will build an earned reputation for inclusive climate and culture, as well as valuing the diversity of our employees and learners, and leverage our abilities, interests, and skills to optimize learner experiences and staff engagement.  The Department will celebrate and raise awareness of religious, ethnic, cultural events; improve opportunities for URMC community input to the Public Safety Review Board; and integrate equity and inclusion training and expectations throughout the institution.

Initiatives

Inclusive Climate Assessment

Golisano Children's Hospital has completed the first cycle of an inclusive climate assessment focusing on staff experiences and anticipates responsive continuous climate improvement programming

Faculty and Staff Training

Develop the following trainings:

  • Develop a training portfolio of meaningful experiential learning focused on inclusion and equity in our clinical care, community, educational, and research missions
  • Create interdisciplinary training opportunities focused on supporting affirming and equitable interpersonal interactions for our faculty, staff, and trainees

Residency and Fellowship Curricula

  • Support Pediatrics residency program leadership’s ongoing focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • The Fredrick Douglass and Susan B Anthony Scholars program  has five scholars enrolled in first cohort, engaged in quality improvement, program development, and advocacy project -  topics include adolescent confidentiality in the electronic health record, eczema management in children of color, early childhood literacy in the City of Rochester, successful graduation from foster care, and improving access to lactation services for women of color living in poverty

Celebration of Diversity

Collaborate with the Golisano Children’s Hospital Pediatric Practice Diversity Committee, the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism, and Social Justice (IDEAS) Council, and the University of Rochester Office of Equity and Inclusion to identify religious, ethnic, and other cultural events to collectively recognize and celebrate a breadth of communities and cultures

Accountability

  • Institution of comprehensive annual evaluations to provide feedback for faculty leadership, including explicit feedback about inclusive climate and culture
  • Create conciliator annual report as an ongoing evaluation of inclusive culture areas of strength and areas for improvement
