Lower Extremity Reconstruction & Limb-Saving Care

Overview

The UR Medicine Limb Salvage Program is a collaboration between UR Medicine Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Pediatric Surgery and Orthopaedics focused on saving the legs and feet of patients who have experienced trauma, vascular disease, bone infections, chronic wounds, cancer or other conditions that may make amputation necessary.

Working together, we provide expert care for the complex restoration and rebuilding of a damaged limb.

What to Expect from the Lower Extremity Reconstruction & Limb-Saving Care

At UR Medicine, our expert teams specialize in using state-of-the-art microvascular and non-microvascular flap surgical techniques combined with adjunct procedures such as skin grafts to restore function and aesthetic appearance of limbs for both pediatric and adult patients.

Lower extremity reconstruction can include:

  • Transplanting muscles from other sites of the body (microvascular surgery)
  • Nerve reconstruction including direct repair and nerve grafting procedures
  • Bone reconstruction
  • Restoration of blood flow in ischemic limbs
  • Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) for patients who do require amputation

What Sets Us Apart?

Our UR Medicine Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery specialists perform hundreds of procedures and surgeries every year, so patient care is always in the hands of well-practiced experts. As part of the University of Rochester Medical Center, our providers exposed to more complex conditions and unusual complications than most surgeons in the Rochester area.

Our surgeons work collaboratively to draw on a diverse set of skills and give patients comprehensive care. Many of our surgeons are teachers and conduct research, so they are up to date on the latest findings and techniques in their field.
