Biomechanics and Multimodal Tissue Imaging (BMTI) Core
Mission Statement
The mission of the Biomechanics and Multimodal Tissue Imaging (BMTI) Core is to support the multidisciplinary, synergistic research programs in the Center for Musculoskeletal Research (CMSR), by providing high quality, consistent, efficient and cost-effective services for biomechanical testing and imaging of musculoskeletal tissues and joints.
These services include:
- State-of-the-art biomechanical testing of biomaterials and musculoskeletal tissues from small and large animal models of orthopaedic trauma and disease, as well as human cadaver tissues and joints.
- State-of-the-art services for tissue and longitudinal in vivo imaging of small and large models of musculoskeletal trauma and disease using micro-CT, multispectral (fluorescence and bioluminescence) IVIS, and ultrasound imaging, including innovations in imaging protocols and image processing algorithms to derive translatable, minimally-invasive correlates of functional healing.
- The Intravital Imaging System allows for fluorescence/ fluorescence lifetime microscopy and phosphorescence lifetime measurements in live tissue and animals. The system enables subcellular resolution and video-rate imaging speed (> 30 frames/second). A separate laser allows plasma-mediated laser ablation for precise tissue removal or bone etching under image guidance.
- Subsidized, cost-effective access for New Investigators to BMTI Core resources and consultation services and training opportunities for other investigators, staff, and trainees in the CMSR through formal educational seminars and one-on-one mentoring.
