Curriculum: Year 2

The second year emphasizes enhancement of clinical non-invasive and invasive skills, while allowing time to develop a research project. As fellows advance in their education and training, they will be given progressively increasing levels of responsibility.

Research

The fellow is expected to participate in all facets of his/her research project, including design and development, grant and Institutional Review Board proposal writing, Clinical Research Center applications, preparation and presentation of abstracts at regional and national meetings, and preparation of a final manuscript. The Department of Pediatrics weekly Core Curriculum provides seminars on medical writing, preparation of grant proposals, scientific paper presentation, and design of teaching programs.

The committee will meet with the fellow on a regular basis to evaluate the fellow’s research progress. Upon completion of training, the ABP will require the fellow to submit a written “research product.” Examples include, but are not limited to: a peer-reviewed publication in which a fellow played a substantial role, an in-depth manuscript describing a completed project, a thesis or dissertation written in connection with the pursuit of an advanced degree, an extramural grant application that has either been accepted or favorably reviewed, or a progress report for projects of exceptional complexity, such as a multi-year clinical trial.

The ABP will also require a comprehensive document (i.e., personal statement), written by the fellow, describing the scholarly activity that includes a description of his/her role in each aspect of the activity and how the scholarly activity relates to the fellow’s own career development plan.
