Medical Student Educational Programs
Welcome to the University of Rochester Department of Pediatrics medical student education programs. We invite you to browse our website and learn more about medical student educational programs and opportunities designed specifically for medical students, such as the Haggerty-Friedman Psychosocial Research Fund, David Hamilton Smith Pediatric Medical Student Year-Out Fellowship, and the SCRC Summer Training Program.
The School of Medicine and Dentistry was established in 1920 and is the home of the biopsychosocial model. This institution embodies the finest traditions of competent and compassionate care, and our programs in medical education are designed to foster excellence in the future leaders of medicine. Our Department has principal responsibility for overseeing the pediatric educational programs for third and fourth year students at the University of Rochester, and also contributes to the clinical programs for first and second year students.
Our Philosophy
The Department of Pediatrics has a long tradition of excellence in its primary mission of "providing optimal, caring, and comprehensive health services integrated with a balanced program of research and education." The goals of the department are unchanged since the department's inception in the 1920's, and include creating new knowledge to improve children's health, providing outstanding service to children and their families, and training the next generation of clinicians, scholars, and teachers.
The fundamental goal of our medical student education program is the personal and professional growth of each student in his/her preparation for a lifelong career in medicine. We approach this goal by being dedicated to the well-being of all children and their families, providing multiple educational opportunities for a balanced and complete curriculum, stressing excellence in the teaching skills of our faculty and house staff, and providing a caring, supportive, and friendly environment in which to learn. Our programs are designed to provide the breadth and depth of experience that will serve the needs of all physicians, including future pediatricians. Our outstanding past and current strength in primary care pediatrics is now complemented by similar levels of excellence in all subspecialty areas and in community oriented programs.
Research
The Department of Pediatrics "Focus on Science" is an initiative designed to recognize and energize young people interested in science and pediatric medicine. A variety of research opportunities working with pediatric faculty investigators are available for summer and year-out experiences. In addition, our Pediatric Interest Group, led by Marybeth Jones, M.D. meets monthly with medical students who have an interest in pediatrics.
