The highest level of care is provided by pediatric cardiac intensivists, pediatric cardiologists, pediatric congenital heart surgeons, specially trained nurses and advanced practice providers. The majority of our nurses have achieved pediatric critical care accreditation by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
Jill Cholette, M.D., Chief

Jill Cholette received her undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College and completed medical school and Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency at the University of Rochester. She is a double-boarded pediatric cardiac intensivist who completed her Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Critical Care Fellowships at the University of Rochester. Her primary clinical research interests are in patient blood management, blood conservation and modification, and coagulation and hemostasis. She is on the executive committee of the PALISI BloodNet subgroup and on the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) research committee. She is the medical director of the PICU and is the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care.
Garrett Coles, M.D.

Garrett Coles is a pediatric cardiac intensivist who is board-eligible in both pediatric critical care and pediatric cardiology. Garrett graduated from Brigham Young University with degrees in Exercise Science and Nutritional Science. He received his medical degree from UT Southwestern with a distinction in Health Policy. Dr. Coles completed his pediatric residency at the University of Rochester. He excelled in both pediatric critical care and pediatric cardiology fellowships at the University of Rochester Medical Center and is now an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in Pediatric Critical Care and Cardiology. Dr. Coles is the Medical Director of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for Golisano Children’s Hospital with clinical interests in pediatric cardiac critical care, pediatric critical care and pediatric cardiology. In collaboration with the Surgical Director, he is responsible for the administration and clinical oversight of the medical management and execution of ECMO. Dr. Coles’ clinical and academic focus is on neonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and he currently serves as the GCH Pediatric ECMO medical director. In addition he is interested in resolving health disparities amongst critically ill children.
Erin Barker, M.D.

Erin Barker graduated from University of Notre Dame, completed medical school at St. Louis University and her Pediatric Residency and Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at Washington University, and a Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Fellowship at the University of Rochester and is now an Associate Professor of Pediatrics. Her academic work focuses on quality improvement, patient safety, and implementation science. She has additional training in quality improvement via the miniATP Course at Intermountain Healthcare. She is the GCH Quality and Safety Team's Director of Inpatient Quality and Safety and the Associate Director of Clinical Informatics for Pediatrics – Inpatient.
Sneha Kolli, M.D.
Dr. Kolli earned her Medical Degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University, completed her Pediatrics Residency at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, FL and then went to complete both a Pediatric Critical Care fellowship and an additional year of Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care at Emory University in Atlanta. In addition to cardiac intensive care, Sneha has a particular interest in Bioethics, organ donation and graduate medical education.
Joseph D. Kuebler, M.D.

Joseph D. Kuebler is a pediatric cardiac intensivist with board certifications in both pediatric critical care and pediatric cardiology. He attended medical school at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Kuebler completed his pediatric residency at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital including a year as a chief resident. He completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School including a year of advanced cardiac imaging (TEE, fetal echocardiography and cardiac MRI). Returning to western NY, Dr. Kuebler became a pediatric critical care fellow at the University of Rochester Medical Center/Golisano Children's Hospital. He is now an assistant professor of pediatrics in pediatric critical care and cardiology and is the medical director of the PCCC. His clinical focus is in the pediatric cardiac care center as well as in general cardiology and transthoracic echocardiography. Dr. Kuebler is also the local clinical champion for the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium (PC4), a national quality improvement collaborative and the co-director of the point of care ultrasound (POCUS) program within pediatric critical care.
Susan Martin, M.D.

Susan Martin received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Louisville. She completed Pediatric Residency training at Saint Louis University, Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship training at the University of Louisville and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Fellowship at the University of Rochester. Her academic interests lie in optimizing quality of acute renal care, novel urinary renal biomarkers and extracorporeal renal support therapies. She is medical director of Acute Renal Care at Golisano Children’s Hospital and leads a multidisciplinary team spanning the entire medical center, university, to investigate the pathogenesis and systemic manifestations of kidney injury. She provides support for nursing-lead quality improvement initiatives such as PICU Liberation and the Developmental Care Team.
Heather Reyes, M.D., M.Eng.

Heather Reyes completed her undergraduate and graduate training in biomedical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, and graduated from medical school from Temple University. She completed Pediatric Residency, Pediatric Critical Care and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Fellowship training at the University of Rochester. Her research interests are in using machine learning and data analytics to improve alarm fatigue, and she has an appointment at the UR Health Lab. Heather received the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Star Research Achievement Award for her presentation on creating smarter PICU alarms using neural networking.
Justin Smith, M.D.
Justin Smith is a pediatric cardiac intensivist who is board-eligible in pediatric Cardiology. Justin received his undergraduate degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, and earned his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Justin completed his residency in Pediatrics at the University of Rochester followed by a Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Critical Care Fellowships at the University of Michigan. His research and quality improvement interests relate to clinical and developmental outcomes following cardiac surgery, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration and communication in the intensive care unit.
Taylor S. Wheaton, M.D.
Dr. Taylor Wheaton received her undergraduate degree from Wager College and completed medical school at George Washington University School of Medicine. She then completed her Pediatrics residency and Pediatric Intensive Care fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. She went on to complete a Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Fellowship at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Wheaton’s clinical interests include the peri-operative care of patients with congenital heart disease and their subsequent neurodevelopment. She is also passionate about resident and fellow education. She is the Director of our GCH Pediatric Critical Care Simulation Program and is interested in developing novel and non-traditional applications of simulation.
Our Fellows
Our fellows are a diverse group of intelligent and talented doctors who have graduated from a pediatric or medicine-pediatric residency and are board-eligible/board certified pediatricians. They are are furthering their medical education in the area of Pediatric Critical Care. They are receiving pediatric critical care training and work alongside the other members of our provider team (Attendings and APPs) in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Cardiac Care Center.
