Learning Objectives
- Learn about current applications of Photobiomodulation (PBM) in oral medicine and dentistry.
- Review principles of safe use of lasers in dentistry.
- Increase awareness of oral diseases and oral manifestations for systemic diseases.
- Appreciate the risk for bleeding in patients with bleeding disorders and ways to reduce this risk.
- Understand the basics of Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) and the use of assessment tools to manage BMS.
- Apprehend the experience of research collaboration with the industry.
- Learn about the use of TeleHealth in oral medicine.
Educational Objectives
- An overview of contemporary oral medicine for the general practitioner with emphasis on practical implications in the dental setting. Key topics will include oral manifestation in systemic diseases and management of oral diseases.
- Practice management in the era of telemedicine and its application to Oral Medicine, as well as, the essence of research collaboration with the industry will be described.
- Likewise, the conference will highlight applications of PBM in oral medicine and dentistry, as well as safe use of laser in the dental practice. The course will allow participants to take an exam for Basic Laser Safety.

Speakers
Dr. Praveen Arany
Dr. Arany is an Assistant Professor of Oral Biology at the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He completed a joint PhD-Residency program at Harvard University as a Harvard Presidential Scholar and holds certificates in clinical translational research from Harvard Medical School and the National Institute of Health. Dr. Arany held additional fellowships at the Indian Institute of Sciences, the National Cancer Institute and Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences & Wyss Institute.
Throughout his career, Dr. Arany has published over 80 publications and is the recipient of numerous industry awards. He is an active member of committees including the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR). Currently he is the past immediate President of the Photobiomodulation Therapy (previously called World Association of Laser Therapy, WALT). Dr. Arany’s work has been featured in mainstream media highlights for channels including Fox news, CNN, MSNBC, Washington Post, the BBC, Reuters and MIT technical review.
Dr. Robert Convissar
Dr. Convissar is a pioneer in the field of laser dentistry. One of the first dentists to incorporate lasers into general practice, Dr. Convissar has over 28 years of experience with CO2, Nd.YAG, Diode and Erbium wavelengths. The author of over 15 peer reviewed papers and author/coauthor of 6 textbooks on laser dentistry, Dr. Convissar has presented over 300 laser seminars on all 5 continents. He practices cosmetic, restorative, and laser dentistry in New York City, where he also serves as Director of Laser Dentistry at New York Presbyterian Hospital Queens. His textbook, "Principles and Practice of Laser Dentistry," now in its 2nd edition, has been the #1 selling laser dentistry textbook in the world for the past 8 years.
Arwa M. Farag
Dr. Arwa Farag is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences at King AbdulAziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and a Visiting Professor at the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine and the American Board of Orofacial Pain. She is also a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh.
Dr. Farag is an active member and a frequently invited speaker of the American academy of oral Medicine, the European Association of Oral Medicine, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, and the International Association of Dental Research. She is currently serving as a chair for the scientific committee of the American Academy of Oral Medicine, as well as, a Steering member of the World Workshop on Oral Medicine. She is currently a reviewer for the JADA, BMJ, and Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, and an Associate Editor for Oral Diseases.
Dr. Vidya Sankar
Dr. Sankar received her DMD, completed a GPR, and served as Staff Dentist in the Infectious Disease Clinic from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She practiced general dentistry in New Jersey prior to earning her Certificate in Oral Medicine from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. She was a recipient of the Sjögren’s Foundation Fellowship, received her Master’s in Health Science degree from Duke University and is certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine (ABOM).
Dr. Sankar’s positions included tenured Associate Professor and Oral Medicine Clinic Director at UTHSC San Antonio, Clinic Director, Oral Medicine and Dentistry clinic at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Co-Director of the Oral Medicine and Oncology clinic at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and is currently Division Director for Oral Medicine at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Professional affiliations are Vice-President of the AAOM and Board member of the Sjogren’s Foundation.
Dr. Alessandro Villa
Dr. Alessandro Villa is the Chief of Oral Medicine and Director of Oral Oncology at the University of California San Francisco, where he also serves as program director for the Oral Medicine Residency program. Previously, he was an associate surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and served as the Program Director for the Oral Medicine Residency Program at Harvard University.
After completing his dental education at the University of Milano, Italy, he obtained his Master of Public Health (AT Still University) and PhD (University of Sassari, Italy). Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Villa completed the Harvard Oral Medicine Residency program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research interests are focused primarily on the management of oral, potentially, malignant disorders and oral complications from cancer treatment. He is also working to reduce the burden of HPV associated oropharyngeal cancers through educational campaigns.

The registration includes 2 steps. At the end of each step you will receive an email:
- 1st email - Confirmation of payment and a link to the 2nd step.
- 2nd email - Confirmation of registration and a Zoom link to log in to the conference.
In order to retrieve your login information, you must complete step two of your registration. There is no additional fee involved for the 2nd step of the registration.

CE Credit Certificate
This conference offers up to 9 CE credit points. Attendance of the full conference will qualify for 8.5 CE credit points. Taking the challenge of the Basic Laser Safety exam and passing it (score of 80 or above) will qualify for additional 0.5 CE credit point. A worthwhile effort. Go for it!
The CE credit certificate will be emailed to the email address that was used during the online registration. Please note that the name that you will enter during registration will be used to prepare your CE credit certificate. Therefore, please register with your full first and last name.
Please allow about 3 weeks from the end of the conference to prepare and send out the certificates.
Please note that the zoom link is individual and will be tracking your attendance. The link is not valid when forwarded to others, thus CE credit will be granted only to the registree.
Basic Laser Safety Certificate
A proof of Basic Laser Safety training will be included in the CE credit certificate for attendees that will attend fully the morning session and will pass the basic laser safety exam. This Basic Laser Safety certificate fulfills the requirement for an annual laser safety training in Eastman Institute for Oral Health, URMC, Rochester, NY.
EIOH DHs and DAs are welcome to attend the laser education and laser safety exam. If DHs’ and DAs’ registration is limited to this section, the certificate will reflect these activities only (separate from the CE credit certificate for the full day continuous education).

Cancellation Policy
All cancellations must be faxed or e-mailed. Refund of registration fee will be as follows:
- Before Nov. 30, 2021 - 100% refund
- From Dec. 31, 2021 until Feb. 4, 2022 - 50% refund
- No refund on cancellations received after Feb. 4, 2022
Registration will only be valid upon receipt of the full payment by the registration department according to the deadline indicated. A confirmation of registration will only be sent after receipt of the required fees.
