At UR Medicine Mental Health and Wellness, our team is developing a state-of-the-art academic clinical department encompassing outpatient and inpatient services with a quadripartite mission of clinical care, community service, education, and research.
With the biopsychosocial model as the core organizing principle, we strive together to develop the Rochester model of psychiatry as the international leader in clinical care, community service, education, and research in psychiatry.
Our aims are as follows:
- Through our clinical service, we aim to provide excellence in general and specialty psychiatric services along with innovative, integrated care models that deliver cost-effective, quality behavioral health service to all medical and surgical patients.
- In our community, we aim to advocate for and deliver accessible, quality behavioral health service, assist medical care of psychiatrically vulnerable population, and enhance ongoing educational and research partnerships with local community organizations in the Greater Rochester area.
- Through our education, we aim to train the future leaders — clinicians, administrators, researchers, and teachers — in these times of value-based healthcare and translational science based on a curriculum of collaboration, communication, complementarity, competence, and compassion.
- Through our research, we aim to expand the department’s existing research strengths in clinical epidemiology and prevention studies and build upon our partnership with the Del Monte Institute to develop translational research in major psychiatric disorders.
UR Medicine's Approach
Our distinguished history is highlighted by psychiatry icons including Dr. George Engel and Dr. John Romano who, three-quarters of a century ago, developed their groundbreaking Biopsychosocial Model. Their pioneering vision considers biological, psychological and social factors and their complex interactions in understanding health, illness and care delivery. To this day, it serves as the cornerstone of education and training of physicians throughout the country and, subsequently, the way care is delivered to millions of patients and their families.
Through renowned inpatient and outpatient clinical services, internationally recognized research, and some of the top physician fellowship programs in the nation, the mission of our rapidly expanding divisions is to champion integrated, multidisciplinary care to enhance cognitive health, mental health and well-being for a broad range of patients of all ages.
Community-based environments promote mental health and wellness, especially for families in need. That's why we've partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester to develop the Family Room. Our mission is to infuse peace, learning, and supportive community connections into the lives of family members, caregivers, and friends who are helping loved ones on the road to recovery.
The Family Room includes:
- Relaxing, comfortable, and home-like atmosphere
- Complimentary snacks, coffee, and beverages
- Kid’s play area
- Laundry area with washer & dryer
- Information on mental health & wellness community resources
Liaison Service
Our Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service provides evaluation and assistance with the management of psychiatric disorders occurring in medically ill or injured inpatients throughout Strong Memorial Hospital. The program offers services to both Adult and Pediatric Services. We are staffed by psychiatrists and psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nurses. A full staff is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Coverage is provided after hours, weekends and holidays through the Psychiatric Emergency Department.
Outpatient Psychiatric Consultation Service
The UR Medicine Strong Minds Adult Outpatient Services offers outpatient psychiatric consultations to primary care providers and current prescribing providers to help them manage the use of medications used to treat mental health disorders in adult patients.
What Sets Us Apart?
A Long-standing Tradition of Excellence
Since its inception in 1945, our Department of Psychiatry – one of the first of its kind – has remained at the forefront of psychiatric medicine and care.
As part of UR Medicine, a world-class medical center and leading academic institution, our Department has also remained true to our mission of delivering outstanding patient-centered care, conducting breakthrough research and training the next generation of psychiatric clinicians, researchers and teachers. In fact, we were the birthplace of the biopsychosocial model of health and illness that serves as the cornerstone of education and training of students and trainees across the field of psychiatry.
The 5 Cs
Our team is guided by the "5 Cs" that help us deliver the best care. We strive to be a compassionate organization for our patients, staff, and each other to carry out the spirit of the biopsychosocial model.
George L. Engel, creator of the biopsychosocial model, once said "For the key to optimal patient care is collaboration, communication and complementarity among all branches of the health professions…To buttress collaboration, communication, and complementarity, the fourth indispensable attribute of health care professionals must be competence."
We have added the fifth "C" for "Compassion". Why Compassion? Compassion involves allowing ourselves to be moved by suffering, and experiencing the motivation to help alleviate and prevent it.
